Blessed Guest - Beth

I'm a Blessed Guest!

My Blessed Guest today comes all the way from North Carolina. I watched as she began her blog-journey, and have even had the opportunity to chat with her on the phone. She's a tender, and loving person. She truly aspires to be all the Lord has for her to be. If you haven't met Beth from Heading Towards My Destiny, today is the day. I know you'll just love her!

Heading towards my destiny

I'm so happy you're here today Beth. I know everyone is looking forward to you sharing a little bit about yourself today! Let's begin in the beginning. Tell us about the birth of your blog. How did you start blogging?

My blog was birthed after one of the most traumatic experiences in my adult life. My husband's home church, and the church where I had served faithfully for 15 years -- split. It was one of the ugliest things I had ever witnessed. It truly shook my foundation! Every thing at church I knew as familiar and "right" was suddenly cracked and no longer a part of my life. My beliefs were challenged and it was a time of great soul searching.

With so many emotions bottled up inside, I knew I needed to WRITE to work my way through.

What do you/ don't you love about it?

I absolutely love my blog and all of the friends that I have made through blogging. It is definitely an extension of me. I have kept diaries and journals most of my life. Now I am typing my experiences versus using a pen. I have created two books containing the contents of my blog so far (it is about time for another one) and I hope my children and grandchildren will treasure them some day. I want them to see my humanity, yet my love and desire to please my Lord.

The ONLY thing I dislike about my blog is the lack of time I have to visit all of my friends. It truly can take over an entire day!

What has surprised you the most about blogging?

I had no idea that I would build such sweet friendships. When I first started blogging, I was THRILLED to see so many other Christians out in the blogosphere. I have friends on here who pray me through!

I also didn't know that bloggers do giveaways and I've been blessed to receive some gift cards, jewelry, books, CD's, etc ... I have given away several presents myself. It truly is a blessing and a lot of fun!

Bloggers are usually writers. Is there anywhere else you write?

I love to write and have always believed that the day would come when I would publish, but not yet. Life is too busy right now with a 4 year old (hopefully another one within the year) and elderly parents who are in poor health. Like most women, I am pulled in different directions. Stay tuned though. I do have some books in me that WILL be birthed.

Do you use your blog for your ministry?

Not intentionally, though people send me emails sharing that my posts minister to them. I just work through my own struggles and share what God has taught me. To God be the glory if anyone is touched!

Who are a few of your favorite blogs to read?

Since I must choose, one that always oozes Jesus is written by my friend Rosel (Off the Beaten Trek at http://offthebeatentrek.blogspot.com/ ). She is prison nurse and she eloquently ties God's truths into her work experiences each day. Her job is so interesting and I'm amazed at how God uses her to reach the prisoners -- one act of mercy at a time.

Another blog that stands out to me is Alicia (Yaya Stuff at http://www.yayastuff.net/ ). Alicia has a style of her own. She is very real and raw - which I admire. She has struggled with the loss of children through miscarriage and is enduring the long road of waiting to adopt a child. She is full of life and I often giggle when I read her posts.

I can't discuss "real and raw" without mentioning Angela at Freespirithaven (http://www.freespirithaven.com/ ). She is my Canadian friend who just puts it out there: Her struggles, her encouragement, her love for Jesus.
Oh, this is a hard question! I have so many friends on here and each one is unique. I love them all! Seriously, I am seeing all of these faces:

Debbie at Heart Choices (http://www.heartchoices.com/ ),Lisa at Sharing Life with Lisa (http://lisashawshares.blogspot.com/ ), Beth at Outnumbered Three-to-one (http://endeanmom1.blogspot.com/ ),Nan at Momstheword (http://momstheword--livingforhim.blogspot.com/ ), Mimi at He & Me + 3 (http://dingdingdorn.blogspot.com/ ), Alicia's pictures at More Than Words (http://minyards7.blogspot.com/ ), Tara at Keeping Up with the Kellys (http://thekellykorner.blogspot.com/ ), Pam at You're Gonna Miss This (http://pramom26.blogspot.com/ ), April (who makes me cry) at Straight From the Heart (http://april-georgia.blogspot.com/ ), Jennifer at Through the Storms of Life (http://ordinarychristianwomansheart.blogspot.com/ ), My little political friend Mel at A Voice for Moms (http://avoiceformoms.blogspot.com/ ), Beth at An Instrument for His Glory (http://aninstrument4hisglory.blogspot.com/ ), CC at His Heart (http://his-heart.blogspot.com/ ),Pam at Pam's Journey of Grace (http://pamsjourneyofgrace.blogspot.com/ ), Deanna at Motherhood in Real Time (http://www.motherhoodinrealtime.com/ ), Liz at TidBits from Liz (http://tidbitsfromliz.blogspot.com/ ), Julie at Wife.Mom.Nurse (http://wifemomnurse.blogspot.com/ ), A new blog that everyone will enjoy is Angie at Laughter Does the Heart Good (http://godcreatedlaughter.blogspot.com/ ), Paula at Hislivingsacrifice (http://www.hislivingsacrifice.com/ ), Alicia at Confessions of a Snowflake (http://confessionsofasnowflake.blogspot.com/), Jill at Forever 'n Ever 'n Always ( http://forevernevernalways1.blogspot.com/) Denise at Shortybear's Place (http://shortybearsplace.blogspot.com/ ), Marsha at Marsha's Musings (http://www.marshasmusings.com/ ), Billy at What I Learned Today (http://www.billycoffey.com/ ),Michele at Beelieve You Can - Michele's Morsels (http://michele-risingabove.blogspot.com/ ), Jenifer at By His Grace (http://www.byhisgraceministry.com/ ), Anitra at If Mama Ain't (http://www.ifmamaaint.blogspot.com/ ), Erica at Scottsville (http://d6scotts.blogspot.com/ ), Alleluiabelle at Humble As I Go http://alleluiabelle.blogspot.com:

Oh, the list could go on for hours. If I didn't mention you, it is only because I'm afraid my sweet interviewer will think I'm copying a list and I'm not. I'm leaving off so many sweet people that I love to visit. Of course it goes without saying JOANNE AT BLESSED ... is she who believed!

Have you ever met your blog-friends in person? If so, which ones?

Yes I have! Mimi at He & Me + 3 (http://dingdingdorn.blogspot.com/ ), Miti at Pieces of Me (http://piecesofmiti.blogspot.com/) , CC at His Heart (http://his-heart.blogspot.com/ ), Liz at Tidbits from Liz (http://tidbitsfromliz.blogspot.com/ ), Tara at Keeping up with the Kellys (http://thekellykorner.blogspot.com/ ), Mel at A Voice for Moms (http://avoiceformoms.blogspot.com/ ), Carolina Mama at Carolina Mama (http://carolinamama1.blogspot.com/ ), Jenifer at By His Grace (http://www.byhisgraceministry.com/ ), Lenika at Empowering Women to Have it All (http://lenika-scott.blogspot.com/ ), Angie at Laughter Does the Heart Good, Anitra at If Mama Ain't (http://www.ifmamaaint.blogspot.com/ ),

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

Other than the Lord of course, I couldn't possibly name one person. I have a group of ladies in my life that I call my "heart-friends". My heart-friends are those who have taught me about God's love, have walked with me through the fire, and have been true sisters in every meaning of the word. I can't imagine where I'd be today without them.

Do you have a favorite scripture?

Psalm 63:1-7
1 O God, you are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you,
my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land
where there is no water.
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.

3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.

4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.

5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

6 On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.

7 Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.

What would surprise us about you?

It is my heart's desire to lay hands on the sick and see them healed! I want to see people healed in ever sense of the word, physically and spiritually. I want to truly walk in that anointing.

What's your favorite flavored potato chip?

I don't eat chips anymore (sniff, sniff), but back in the day I guess I loved BBQ.

Favorite thing to do with your family?

Ride our ATV and enjoy the beauty of the mountains.

What book is on your nightstand right now?

God Sightings: The One Year Bible (NIV)

Last food you ate?

Peanuts.

When was the last time you played the air guitar?

Surely it has been a WHILE. Ha.

Thank you for being my Blessed Guest today Beth. It's been a pleasure getting to know you a little bit more. Come back over again real soon!

Blessed Guest - Nan, Moms The Word

I'm a Blessed Guest!

My Blessed Guest today was introduced to me through blogland. When you come across a blog like hers, you pull up a seat and stay awhile. She has a heart for the home and a love for her her family that shines through each post on her site. If you haven't met her already, I'm looking forward to introducing you. I know you're going to just love her. Another gal I hope to hug someday.

Please give a loud round of comments, to my blog-friend Nan at Moms the Word!

MomsTheWord

Welcome to Blessed. It's an honor to have you stop by today. Your blog Moms the Word has encouraged many in the world wide web, to take joy in their homes. I'm so happy you're here Nan. Pull up a chair and grab yourself a cup of tea. We're looking forward to having you share a little bit about yourself today!

Let's begin in the beginning Nan. Tell us about the birth of Moms the Word.

One day I did a Google search on budgets and wound up on a blog. I was enchanted by the idea that I could come back the next day and read more ideas on the subject. Who knew? That blog led me to finding other blogs and I was hooked! Eventually I began to toy with the idea of starting my own frugal blog. I began blogging in October 2008 but my blog soon took on a life of it's own and it's totally different from how I originally envisioned it, but that's o.k!

What do you/ don't you love about it?

I love the bloggy friendships I have made, they're awesome! It's hard to believe that you can make such friendships with total strangers who now seem like sisters. I mean, there's a whole sisterhood out there that you can talk with about cramps, pimples, leg hair, recipes, family, and the Lord! What's not to love! I don't like the fact that I can't keep up with everyone's blogs and commenting like I'd like to. There just isn't enough time to read and comment on as many blogs as I'd like, and that's saying something as I like to talk! I also had to cut down on my own blogging due to the time factor. I don't like how blogging can just suck me in so I have to really be careful.

What has surprised you the most about blogging?

That I actually enjoy it. I had never heard of blogging before but I don't think I would have imagined myself as someone who would enjoy it. Previously, I rarely spent time on the computer, I didn't like email or facebook (I like it now) and stayed as far away from the computer as I could. I am also surprised at the sweet friendships that I have made. Also surprised that someone actually reads and laughs at the things that I write. Sometimes I think that I should pay them for allowing me to subject them to my sometimes strange sense of humor and the things that I find funny.

Bloggers are usually writers. Do you write anywhere else or for anyone else?

No, I don't. I did enjoy writing in school though. I also made up stories for my children when they were little, and my mom always encouraged me to write them down. I also used to write awesome letters that I never mailed.......

Do you use your blog for your ministry?

I want my blog to encourage women to take joy in their homes and to make their homes sing. I want to encourage them in their marriage, parenting their children, their walk with the Lord, or to make them think or just laugh and have fun, It leans more to the lighthearted and you won't find deeply spiritual things on my blog very often. That's because I tend to agonize over a spiritual post and want to make sure that I am communicating my thoughts well and that any Scripture I use or information I give is correct and in context and won't be misunderstood.

For that reason it takes me a very long time to do a post such as that, so I don't do them often. I don't want the heavy responsibility of communicating things properly, which explains the humorous posts or posts about messy kitchens, or children leaving their shoes all over the place, etc. Also, it's a time factor thing. It's easier to do a quick, lighthearted post. Still, I hope that my faith pervades my blog, although it is more of an outlet than a ministry. Though I'd like to think it can minister from time to time.

Who are a few of your favorite blogs to read?

Oh, I couldn't list just one here, there are so many (but you know I love yours!). I love mom blogs, frugal blogs, humorous blogs, spiritually encouraging blogs, homemaking, cottage decorating.....

Have you ever met your blog-friends in person? If so, which ones?

No, unfortunately I haven't. There are only a few blog friends I've made that live in the Pacific NW but we haven't met yet. Maybe someday!

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

Wow, do I have to pick just one? I would say that knowing Jesus as my Savior has made the biggest impact. He is Someone Who has been faithful in my past, given me guidance in the present and gives me a hope for my future. My mother was a huge influence growing up and I am blessed to have her living in our home with us today. My husband and my children have hugely impacted my life as well, as I can't imagine living without them!

Do you have a favorite scripture?

Philippians 1:6 is my life verse that I memorized when I was just a teen: "Being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it, till the day of Jesus Christ."

What would surprise us about you?

Wow, I don't know. Ummmm, honestly, I don't think anything would surprise you about me. I have blogged about all sorts of strange things that come into my head and frankly, I think you all just shake your heads and say "Well, there she goes again.....where does she come up with that stuff?" Let's just call it The World According To Nan.

What's your favorite flavored potato chip?

I like the plain ones. Boring, maybe, but a classic!

Favorite thing to do with your family?

Does going to Disneyland count? I also just love the times when we can sit and eat popcorn and play board games or watch a movie together. Just being together!

What book is on your nightstand right now?

My Bible is always a constant. I also like to read several books at once. I will start with a book and get about halfway through and then start another one, then eventually go back and finish the first one. I like a little excitement and variety in my reading, I guess!

Last food you ate?

Hel-looooo! I am eating right now!!!!! You seriously think I could sit here at the computer and not eat? Puh-lease. I am eating chocolate and shhhhh, please don't tell anybody!

When was the last time you played the air guitar?

Wow, a looooooong time ago. I had to do it for a drama warm-up once. Nearly pulled a ham-string......

Thanks for stopping by today Nan. I know my readers loved getting to know you better. Come over again soon!

Blessed Guest - Lynnette

I'm a Blessed Guest!

We share the same last name, but we're not related, at least not genetically. Spiritually we are sisters. We share the same Father GOD and the same love of family. She is a published author who has written about the heartache of losing a child. Not the journey any of us would ask the Lord to take us on, but one she walks daily with her husband and her Jesus.

You can't go to her blog and not feel His love shine through. Her words are those of a mother's heart, maybe that's why I keep going back. I understand her love. I understand her joy. And, hidden in the deepest parts of my heart, I fear her pain.

She invites us in and we peek behind the curtain of her life. Curious to see a woman whose faith fuels her days. Her spiritual resume reads more like Job, but her blog reads more like the life of Mary, choosing the better part, she sits at His feet and I am better for it.

I've had the privilege of reading Lynnette's book, In His Faithfulness, He Afflicted Me. For those who have experienced the loss of a child, or if you know of someone who has been given that cross to bear, her book would be a beautiful, encouraging, faith-filled gift.

Would you please give a big round of comments for today's Blessed Guest, Lynnette from Dancing Barefoot on Weathered Ground.

Welcome to Blessed... I'm am so happy you could stop by. Your blog has touched the hearts of many in the world wide web, mine included. I'm so happy you're here to share a little bit about yourself today!

And I'm happy to share about me and my blog. Thank you for inviting me Joanne.

Why did you begin blogging?

I began blogging because 1,001 Ways to Market Your Book told me to! Seriously, that is why I started - since I do have a book that I wanted to market, but boy was I in for a treat! I found blogging to be delightful! You could definitely call me a "Blog Addict", but I don't plan to go to Blogaholics Anonymous because I don't want to get over this addiction.

What do you/ don't you love about it?

I love everything about it! I love that I've met such wonderful people (including you Joanne!), and I love that I've been able to meet people who have lost children and loved ones, because it's given me opportunity to share hope with them. I love making people laugh. Blogging is a wonderful place to be creative and knowing I have a blog to share my life inspires me to live a more exciting one.

Well, there is one thing that I don't like. I don't like that I can't sit on my computer all day and pop around to visit all of the wonderful people who follow me, but when you're home with six other people all day (seven when Kyle's home from work), sitting on the computer all day is... not... possible. Darn! (And besides, I get tired of the computer. It freaks my eyes out after a while).

What has surprised you the most about blogging?

I'm surprised that people follow me! I thought I'd never have more than a few followers and when they came, they came fast! I feel blessed, privileged and yes, quite surprised that people find my life interesting.

Bloggers are usually writers. Do you write anywhere else or for anyone else?

I do write. In fact, I wrote a book, In Faithfulness, He Afflicted Me - It is my personal story. God has allowed a lot of loss in my life - in fact, three of my children. Samuel died at 13 days old, Josiah died at 5 days old and Anna died at 6 1/2 years old. Through my losses God's love, compassion and peace overwhelmed me. My book is really a story about how He worked in my life. He's the hero of my story.

I'm also writing another book, but I haven't revealed what it's about yet. You'll have to follow my blog to hear details as they come. I will say that it's an exciting true story that is amazing evidence of God being at work in our lives - even when we are unaware. I'm handing out clues on my blog and I know my readers are going crazy, but all in due time...

Do you use your blog for your ministry?

Absolutely! I attempt to give hope to grieving parents. I love to spread joy (usually by being a bit of a spaz). I enjoy supporting others in their ministries and love to see Christians working together.

One of the main purposes of my blog is to connect bloggers. I have a weekly Getting to know YOU event where I feature blogs and while this might not seem like a ministry, it actually is. I hear stories all the time about how I sent people their way at just the right time - and I love hearing that. Feels good to be used by God to encourage others.

Who are a few of your favorite blogs to read?

I hate to say because I don't want to leave anybody out. Well, how about if I share the blogs of my mom and children? That'd be okay right? And besides, they ARE my absolute favorite blogs.

Jared - The Traveler

Abigail - Rear Window

My Momma - Truthful Tidbits

Cecily and Silas have blogs too, but so far they are private - until they get a little better at it.

Have you ever met your blog-friends in person? If so, which ones?

I do have some local friends who follow my blog, but I know that's not what you meant. I haven't met any in real life YET. I'm having a Chum Gathering in June. It'll be a big bash at my home with a live band, good food and best of all FELLOWSHIP! Oh and by the way, "Chums" is the term of endearment I've given my followers. It makes me think of Anne and Gilbert on Anne of Green Gables.

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

Jesus. Simply Jesus. I would be NOTHING without him. He's not only changed me through and through, but he's given me eternal hope. I can't wait to go and give him a big huge hug and kiss in heaven. After that, I'll fall down at his feet and worship him.

Do you have a favorite scripture?

Lots of them! One that stands out to me as I type this though is, "Call unto me and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not." Jeremiah 33:3

That verse EXCITES me. It's like God has surprises for us, and I love surprises!

What would surprise us about you?

If you read my blog, probably nothing. I don't hide anything about myself. I reveal the Good, Bad and The Ugly. But, it did just dawn on me that people might not know that I sing opera - well, silly like, but I'm actually quite good. (HA!) Oh, and my readers were a little surprised when I told them that I loved dreadlocks. I do. I love them!

What's your favorite flavored potato chip?

Oh, potato chips are so bad for me! I try not to eat them very often, but when I do I prefer Natural Lays. They are pretty darn good and I love salt! (Redmond Sea Salt is my fave)

Favorite thing to do with your family?

We love to watch movies together, but I'd say that my favorite thing to do together would be to go on vacation. We try to go somewhere (usually Branson, MO), every year.

What book is on your nightstand right now?

Bunny My Honey by Anita Jeram I read it to Harrison every day. He has it memorized.

Last food you ate?

I'm eating a Cinnamon Roll as I type up these answers. A sticky, gooey, homemade cinnamon roll. Yum! And yes, I made them. Aren't you proud of me? I used to be in the Cinnamon Roll business, selling them to my husband's co-workers, but I quit. He kept me too busy.

When was the last time you played the air guitar?

I played on my blog a few months ago - Juke Box Hero. Quite fun.

Thank you for being my Blessed Guest today Lynnette.

It was my pleasure! Answering interview questions is easy! My next project is a devotional for Lindsay and that's going to take a bit more out of me, but worthy work! Thanks for reading! I hope I made you smile.
Now, come and visit my blog!

Blessed Guest - Lauren

I'm a Blessed Guest!

My Blessed Guest today is an adorable gal I met through blogging. She's on my list of girls I'd love to hug in person one day. If you haven't already met Lauren at Living By Faith, pop on over and introduce yourself today.

I won't give away her story, but for those of you on the journey of adoption, her blog will be a comfort and a great encouragement. She will touch your hearts and even remind those of us who are a teensy bit older, what it was like to be a young married couple again.

Welcome Lauren!

How did Living by Faith begin?

I started blogging in January of 2009. So, I am relatively new to the blogging world. I started my blog and had originally titled it “Live Laugh Love.” I felt the Lord prompting me to write my thoughts down and I chose to do that through blogging. For about 4-5 months my husband was the only one who read my blog. In that time I changed the title to “Walking By Faith.” I started getting comments on my posts in late spring and realized that other people were reading them! In the fall of 2009 I changed the title to “Living By Faith” because I think it perfectly describes my life. I don’t anticipate changing the title again.

What do you/ don't you love about it?

I love the community that has developed through the blogging world. In the sphere of Christian women bloggers there is such a loving and supportive spirit. I’ve made some incredible friends in blog land. Doors have opened for me to share Christ with others and to encourage woman by sharing the experiences the Lord has led me through.

One negative about blogging is the unfortunate experience of being taken advantage of. When you put yourself out there on the internet, you make yourself fairly vulnerable. It is sad that there are people out there who use the internet to abuse others. I have been very fortunate to only have limited experience with this.

What has surprised you the most about blogging?

I think the biggest surprise to me is that people actually read my blog and come back for more! I have been amazed at the way God has used my story, especially the hard parts, to bring healing and/or encouragement to others

Bloggers are usually writers. Do you write anywhere else or for anyone else?

I still have a hard time considering myself a real writer, but I guess I am! I write for the Family Channel at Exemplify Online Magazine. It’s been an incredible blessing!

Do you use your blog for your ministry?

It’s my hope and prayer that my blog ministers to other women.

Who are a few of your favorite blogs to read?

Oh my goodness … this is always a hard question because there are so many!
My number one is Amy @ Filled with Praise. She and I have become very close and I consider her one of my best friends (even though we’ve never met in real life!)
Rachel @ Musing of a Future Pastor’s Wife is another one of my favorites and actually the first blog I ever read (other than my own.)
Andrea @ Under Grace and Over Coffee is fabulous and, incidentally, editor of the Exemplify Family Channel!
There are a lot more – but those 3 are in my top 20! : )

Have you ever met your blog-friends in person? If so, which ones?

I’ve never met anyone who was a blog friend FIRST. I do have a few blog friends who are also real life friends though: Brooke @ The Mountain Brooke has been a real life friend for about 4 years. We used to live in the same little mountain town, but now are on opposite sides of the country. I have a couple other real life friends with private blogs that I enjoy reading.

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

In blog land or in real life??
In real life it would definitely be my husband.
In blog land it would be Amy @ Filled with Praise. She is a prayer partner and a friend. She was influential in our decision to adopt our son from Ethiopia.

How about some tried and true blog randomness:

Oh no… another tough one. Hmmm: My favorite color is pink. I love dogs but have 2 cats.I used to like country music, but now just listen to Christian radio and worship CD’s. My favorite number is 7 … don’t know why, but it sure is biblical! I like my coffee black. I need a good 8 hours of sleep to be fully functional.

Do you have a favorite scripture?

My life verse is probably 2 Corinthians 5:7 “We live by faith, not by sight.”
I also adore Philippians 2:25 “shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life.”

What would surprise us about you?

Before I came to Christ I went through about a 6 month wild phase. I had 4 piercings up each ear and short spiky hair. I look back now and wonder who that girl was. It wasn’t me. I am so thankful that Jesus rescued me from myself. I look at young girls now who are trying to look cool and act tough and I wonder about the pain in their hearts, and what awful hurts they’re hiding. That was me – living each day in agony on the inside, and acting like I didn’t have a care in the world on the outside. People who know me now are always shocked when I tell them about who I was when Christ came for me.

What's your favorite flavored potato chip?

BBQ all the wayyyyy!!!

Favorite thing to do with your family?

I love my weekly date night with John. My favorite is to cuddle up with a bowl of popcorn, a mug of root beer, and an old movie.

What book is on your nightstand right now?

Daylight Must Come by Helen Roseveare.

Last food you ate?

Hot Dog with ketchup and mustard … yum.

When was the last time you played the air guitar?

I think I do it unconsciously a lot when I am listening to worship music. I taught myself to play with worship songs, so when I hear or sing them I strum my hand against my belly a lot.

Lauren, thank you so much for stopping by Blessed today and sharing your life with us!

Blessed Guest - Susan

I'm a Blessed Guest!

When I flew to North Carolina, in 2008, for the P31 Woman She Speaks conference, I had no idea the people I would meet. As I packed my things, Susan was already on God's short list of people in the blog-world I would soon call friend.

Who wouldn't love her? She's a soft-spoken fiery redhead (an oxymoron, I know) who draws you in with her love of the Lord. We were both there to learn more about writing, and more about having our ideas become published books. Two women out of our comfort zone, trying very hard to figure out how we could accomplish something we felt called to do. Both of us feeling overwhelmed and unqualified for the task that loomed ahead. We connected immediately.

Going into our publisher meetings we would encourage each other in passing, "Go gettum Susan! Your book idea is AWESOME! You are here for a purpose, and don't forget it. I'll meet you at dinner. I can't wait to hear what they tell you." I yelled to her over my shoulder, as we passed in the crowded hotel. Susan is one of those humble writers who aren't aware of the gift they possess. Another gift in itself, inspiring me to encourage her even more.

If you haven't had a chance to drop by Eternity Cafe, maybe today is the day you should. Susan has a faith-filled cup waiting just for you.

Without any further adieu, Susan Panzica!

Welcome to Blessed... it is such an honor to have you here Susan. Your blog has touched the hearts of many in the world wide web, mine included. I'm so happy you've agreed to share a little bit about yourself today!

So, let's start from the beginning. How did Eternity Cafe begin?

I first heard about blogging at the She Speaks conference. A few months later, I started blogging as a way to practice writing and hopefully be a blessing to others. It's turned out to be a special blessing for me. Called Eternity Cafe, it's my desire is to dialog with my readers as we might over a cup of coffee. Through stories and humor, I try to share an eternal perspective on earthly matters.

What do you/ don't you love about it?

I love the new friends I've made in the "blogosphere." Women who are encouraging and uplifting. I love that the Lord has given me words to share that I never knew I had.

I don't love how sometimes I spend entirely too much time in blogworld.

What has surprised you the most about blogging?

I'm surprised that I'm doing it at all. I'm surprised that God keeps popping post ideas into my head. And I'm shocked that I can figure out any of the technical parts of blogging!

Bloggers are usually writers. Do you write anywhere else or for anyone else?

I'm just beginning to call myself a writer, even though I don't really feel like one yet. I've been a speaker and teacher for years, but now I'm moving into the writing arena, and it's all new to me. It started with the idea for a book, which led me to a conference, which led me to blogging, and now that book idea may be moving toward publication which is both thrilling and terrifying.

Do you use your blog for your ministry?

As a speaker and Bible study teacher, I use my blog to share encouraging truths from the Word. The blog fits right in with my vision for ministry which is:

"My desire is to encourage you in your walk with the Lord, to edify (build you up) in His Word, to equip you to serve Him with enthusiasm and joy, and inspire an eternal perspective."

Who are a few of your favorite blogs to read?

Blessed - of course!

Lynn Mosher of Heading Home

Stuff Christians Like

and helpful writer's blogs like:

Michael Hyatt

Rachel Gardner

Mary DeMuth

Have you ever met your blog-friends in person? If so, which ones?

Joanne, you and I met at She Speaks in 2008 before I was blogging. You are the one who was instrumental in helping me launch Eternity Cafe, and I'm so grateful to you for that.

Through your blog, I connected with Susan from Runner Mom, and then she and I met at She Speaks last year!

I've met Cheri Bunch (Seven Branches) and Susan Reinhardt (Christian Writer/Reader Connection) in person first and then followed their excellent blogs.

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

That’s hard to say. In my life, I’d have to say my husband and my kids, my pastor, and some dear friends. In my writer’s life, God used Susanne Scheppmann from Proverbs 31 to confirm His calling in my life and as a great encourager.

How about some tried and true blog randomness:

Do you have a favorite scripture?

Eph. 3:20-21 Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

What would surprise us about you?

I am a Jewish believer in Jesus Christ who came to Him through a band in a bar. I worked for US Customs, so I was a Jewish tax-collector, like Matthew, and God used the book of Matthew to speak to me and lead me to Him.

What's your favorite flavored potato chip?

I’m a purist. Basic Lays. No ruffles, no ridges, no flavors.

Favorite thing to do with your family?

Vacation at the Jersey shore (or as we say “go down the shore”) or hang out at home with a movie or game.

What book is on your nightstand right now?

The Bible

Last food you ate?

My homemade Pasta Primavera. Yum!

When was the last time you played the air guitar?

Absolutely never! But my husband and kids are musicians, and I like to silently sing along they practice.

Thank you for being a Blessed...guest, and taking the time to share a little bit of your life with all of us.

And thank you for asking! You are a blessing, and I am truly blessed to know you.

Blessed Guest - Jesse Florea

I'm a Blessed Guest!

Every year at the Mount Hermon Christian Writer's conference, writers gather at zero-dark-thirty, to take their annual Palm Sunday trek to the cross. It was on this walk, that a group of us began chatting. We spoke of our children, our faith, and the spouses we were missing back home. Only later, on the way back, did I discover one of these men was the editor of Focus on the Family's Clubhouse Jr. magazine.

Though I don't write for the children's market, I could tell he would be an editor who would be a blessing to work with. His heart for children was clear as he spoke of his own kids, and his desire for a children's magazine to make a difference for little ones.

Some people are genuine. Some appointments are divine appointments. My walk up to the cross was a blessed appointment to share a couple minutes with a kind and humble man. You are here today for a purpose. You might think it's just to read another interview. But, maybe it's to see that editors truly can be genuine and God-honoring.

As a mother to four children, it's comforting to know a magazine like Clubhouse Jr., with the ability to touch little ones hearts for Christ, is being guided by a man like him.

Would you please give a warm welcome and a round of applause(comments)for my special Blessed Guest, Jesse Florea.

Welcome to Blessed... it's such an honor to have you here Jesse. So, fill us all in, how did you begin your journey in the world of publishing?

I fell in love with writing and knew I wanted to be a journalist as a sophomore in high school when I took an Introduction to Journalism class. I started writing for the local paper and my school newspaper that year. Before that, I wanted to be a middle school teacher. As editor of Focus on the Family Clubhouse, I can combine my love for writing, with my passion for children and my love for the Lord. I went to Wheaton College in IL and earned B.A. and M.A. Degrees in Communications with an emphasis on journalism.

What do you love about being an editor?
Being able to put together a magazine that’s better than the sum of its parts. God uses Clubhouse to change lives forever. We’ve had children accept Christ, make lifelong relationships through our pen pal program and write in years later to let us know the impact that the magazine had on their faith.
It’s a blessing to be able to work with like-minded authors to put together this magazine. We have an amazing stable of authors! I especially appreciate it when an author will write in and say she noticed the changes we made and that those edits made the story even better.

What don't you love about it?
Rejecting stories. Editors aren’t ogres. We receive nearly 100 stories a month and only purchase 5 or 6. That means we’re dashing a lot of hopes. I trust that God has a plan for all the stories that come our way, and pray for wisdom as we decide what to purchase and how to combine stories in a particular issue.

What has surprised you the most about your job?
How interactive our readers are. Clubhouse is for 8-12 year olds. Because of COPA, we can’t communicate with our readers through e-mail. (Which is good, because children need to be protected.) But we get hundreds of letters every month. The kids let us know what they like, what they don’t and always have good advice for other readers.

When it comes to a new writer, what do you think is most important for them to know when submitting to your magazine/publishing house?
You have to do your research. Know the magazine before you send in a story. Make sure your manuscript has the right tone, voice and word count for the publication. The longest stories we publish are 1,600 word fiction stories and most of those are written on assignment by authors who’ve worked with us for years. The best way to break in is through 1,000 word stories that can be historical fiction, personality, quiz, craft or recipe.
Also, your opening paragraph better be outstanding. We have an editorial staff of two (one full-time person and two part-time). With that staff we put together a 32-page monthly magazine, update a Web site frequently and correspond to fans (mainly parents) through Facebook. We’re all very busy, so if a story doesn’t wow us from the beginning, it’s probably going to be rejected.

Are there any red flags an editor sees that will give a writer an immediate rejection?
Not having the proper Christian slant. We don’t beat kids over the head with the Bible. Sometimes it’s just a character-based lesson. But there has to be take-away value. We also don’t like dragons, witches or magic.

Anything specific your magazine/publishing house is looking for right now? (Types of books, articles, sidebars, etc.)
We always need stories of ordinary kids doing something extraordinary. Could be training assistance dogs. Maybe it’s baking for the homeless shelter. Children are amazing. We love it when kids can motivate other kids to make a difference in the world for Jesus.

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?
My grandmother. She passed away several years ago, but I spent a lot of time with her growing up. She always read to me, bought me books and encouraged me in my writing. She was an old English teacher, so maybe I got a little of my passion for words from her. Amazing lady who I dearly miss.

What do you think about blogging? Do you have your own blog?
Not a huge fan. I read some, but don’t do any of my own. A lot of good has come through blogging. But I think we all tend to be too busy and fill our time with things—sometimes all good things. I liked this quote that I read a few months ago:
“Books enlarge us by giving direct access to experiences not our own. In order for this to work, however, we need a certain type of silence, an ability to filter out the noise. Such a state is increasingly elusive in our over-networked culture, in which every rumor and mundanity is blogged and tweeted. Today, it seems it is not contemplation we seek but an odd sort of distraction masquerading as being in the know.”
Los Angeles Times book reviewer David L. Ulin, August 2009

Do you have a favorite scripture?
Romans 12:2. I sign my books with that verse. Great verse for children and adults. The world is powerful, but we need to continually seeks God’s will.

What would surprise us about you?
My best times are spent with my wife and teenagers outdoors. We climb at least one of Colorado’s 14,000 foot mountains every summer.

What's your favorite flavored potato chip?
Que Pasa organic corn chip. Boring, I know.

Favorite thing to do with your family?
Travel.

What book is on your nightstand right now?
A Praying Life by Paul Miller

Last food you ate?
Chocolate chip banana bread with toasted coconut that I baked this morning.

When was the last time you played the air guitar?
In the Ansel Adams wilderness with a bunch of teens about 10 years ago. Good times.

Jesse, my hope is that my readers will take a moment today and head over to the Clubhouse Jr. site. I had a blast while I was there. It made me wish I was in grade school again. Where was this magazine when I was eight!? Ok, don't answer that.

Thanks again for taking the time to share a little bit of your world with all of us. It's been a pleasure having you stop by today.

Blessed Guest - Mari

I'm a Blessed Guest!

There's an interesting thing that happens when you begin blogging. People begin reading what you write. Since this blog began as a way to practice my writing skills, I was shocked when people began reading. Over the years, there has been one gal who has been faithful from the very first grammatical-error-filled-post. Her name is Mari and she's my Blessed Guest today.

Mari from My Little Corner of the World has been my faithful encourager. Her blog is wonderful. It's a joy to watch the Michigan seasons unfold through the lens of her camera, and I can't tell you how many amazing recipes I've received from her. She has a great sense of humor and a beautiful family. Her son Andy is serving in the military. This explains the occasional counter on her sidebar, letting her readers know when he is coming home again. I always love reading those posts and seeing those happy pictures. Mari is someone I pray I get the chance to hug in person one day.

So, would you please give a big round of applause (and comments) for my next special Blessed Guest Mari!

Mari, I'm so grateful you are here. I know you work full-time and are probably dealing with snow over at your place right now. Thank you for stopping and sharing a bit of your life with us.

How did My Little Corner of the World begin?

I have two sisters who both had a blog. They kept telling me to start and blog and my response was "I don't have that much to say". I guess I have more to say than I thought because nearly 3 years later I'm still blogging!

What do you/ don't you love about it?

I love the people I've gotten to know from all over. I love the way so many blogs minister to me, giving me a message I know God sent in my direction. I love the funny things, unusual things and the great ideas that have been passed on to me through a blog. The down side is the time factor. It takes time to write blog posts and even more time to check in and comment on blogs, and it can be hard to cut back.

What has surprised you the most about blogging?

I've been surprised by how well I've gotten to know some bloggers, although I may never have met them face to face.

Bloggers are usually writers. Do you write anywhere else or for anyone else?

Not me! I love to read, but writing has never been my strong point.

Do you use your blog for your ministry?

I try to. My faith is part of my life, and although I blog about many other things, I do posts regarding my faith also. I would hope that my faith and the joy God has given me shows through in my blog.

Who are a few of your favorite blogs to read?

If you saw how many blogs were in my Google Reader you wouldn't ask this question! I'm going to try to list a few that post regularly, that I always enjoy. There is:

Cheryl@Cherdecor http://cherdecor2.blogspot.com/

Sarah @Short Stop http://grshortstop.blogspot.com/

Kayren@Everything's Coming up Daisies http://pinkdaisygirl.blogspot.com/

Sandra@Diary of a SAHM http://familycorner.blogspot.com/

Susan@Penless Writer http://penlesswriter.blogspot.com/

And of course Joanne from Blessed!

There are many others that I enjoy and check out whenever they post, but as I said, the list is too long!

Have you ever met your blog-friends in person? If so, which ones?

When our family traveled to South Carolina for Andy's graduation from Basic Training, we were able to meet Dena from Growing Up Girlie. http://annabellelouisebailey.blogspot.com/ She gave us some great tips on place to visit and eat, and even helped us out via phone when we were lost in Charleston.

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

This is a tough question. Of course, my parents made a huge impact, because of the way they raised me. I was blessed to be born into a loving Christian home. My husband has been impacting me for the nearly 29 years we've been married and even while we were dating. And anyone who is a parent can tell you how much your kids change your life, not only in the way you live, but also in the way you think. Being a parent makes you put someone else first, makes you think in the long term, adds joy and a bit of stress to your life!

How about some tried and true blog randomness:

Do you have a favorite scripture?

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you." What a great reminder that God is in charge and has plans for my life and for my loved ones.

I also like Romans 8:38-39 "for I am persuaded that neither death nor life, not angels or principalities, or powers, not things present or things to come. Not height, not depth or any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

What would surprise us about you?

I don't have as much to say in real life!

What's your favorite flavored potato chip?

Plain old chips are my favorite

Favorite thing to do with your family?

Since my kids are grown and one is currently in Colorado it's pretty hard to get us together. However when Andy is home we are often just home - together. We like to play Wii games and laugh with each other. When the kids were younger we loved going camping together.

What book is on your nightstand right now?

Take the Risk, written by Ben Carson. He is a famous Christian neurosurgeon, who was raised by a single Mom in Detroit. He talks about the risks he went through as a child and the risky surgeries he undertakes now.

Last food you ate?

Pasta E Fagioli soup for supper

When was the last time you played the air guitar?

You know, I don't think I've ever played air guitar. Does air piano count? I play piano and find my fingers playing along occasionally!

Mari, thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and visit us today. Your blog has blessed me so many times. I'm grateful you are still finding things to say.

Blessed Guest - Elaine

I'm a Blessed Guest!

Thanks for stopping by. You're just in time for my first Blessed Guest of the month. Pull up a comfy chair and grab yourself a cup of tea. This is going to be fun.

It's my pleasure to introduce all of you to a North Carolina gal and my friend. A woman who has a gift of writing that pierces my heart and has refreshed my tired soul more times than I can count. I'd like you all to give a warm welcome to Elaine from Peace for the Journey.

I had read Elaine's blog before (almost) meeting her in person at the She Speaks conference. I caught a glimpse of her in my peripheral, through my tear-filled eyes, after receiving some disappointing news from a woman who was an over-achiever in the discouragement department.

Elaine and I have spent the past two years getting to know each other and our families through our written word. Every so often we will shoot emails back and forth, encouraging one another.

Prompted to chat on the phone last year, our conversations have always been easy and quite humorous. Since her blog is so deep and spiritually filling, I'd expected the same deep well when we spoke. She is truly a godly and wise woman, but I think we were both surprised with each other. I was deeper in my thoughts and she was quite hilarious. I look forward to her books being published because I've told her I will gladly and freely work her book table.

Peace for the Journey is a blog I encourage all believers to subscribe to. As Elaine and Jesus walk hand in hand together, she invites her readers to follow along on their journey. And what a beautiful journey it is.

So, once again, please welcome Elaine.

Elaine, it's so great to have you here today. There's so much I want to ask you. Let's begin in the beginning. Tell us about the birth of your blog.

The name for my blog surfaced long before I'd ever heard of the word "blog." In fact, long before I ever owned a computer. "Peace for the Journey" has been the closing benediction of my correspondence for at least the past ten years. I'm not sure how or even why it intially surfaced, but I have an inkling it had something to do with the fact that my life, in that season, hosted a fragmented "peace."

As for blogging, there is really only one reason I started my blog. I wanted to be able to leave a comment on one of my favorite author's blog, Alicia Chole. At the time, her blog didn't allow for anonymous comments. As someone who dearly admired her work and wanting desperately to be able to connect with her somehow, I decided to walk through the "set up" for starting a blog so that I would be able to share my thoughts with her. Once I saw how easy it was to leave my world of anonymity and join the vast array of other authors who painted their words for public display, I was hooked. Now, two years and nearly 300 posts later, I suppose I'll stick around a while longer.

What do you/don't you love about it?

I love writing. Blogging allows me an open forum for penning my thoughts and for receiving immediate feedback. That being said, one of the drawbacks that I felt early on in the process was the time commitment it required. I don't "do" quick posts. I labor over most of them for hours, simply because the goal of my writing is to point others back to Jesus. I want to be careful and deliberate in that pointing. Honoring Christ with my words is one of the greatest ways I've found to express my love for him. Thus, my desire to do it well and to do so with no regrets.

What has surprised you the most about blogging?

The biggest surprise and joy I've received from blogging have been the relationships I've formed with the community of readers who frequent my blog. In my wildest dreams, I couldn't have imagined on the front end of this blogging adventure how God would bless my life with so many wonderful, deep friendships.

Bloggers are usually writers. Do you write anywhere else or for anyone else?

I've authored some articles with "Exemplify" on-line magazine and had some devotionals published with the Upper Room. In addition, I've completed three full manuscripts and am currently working on a fourth one on the topic of "faith." My third manuscript, peace for the journey: in the pleasure of his company is soon to be released through WinePress Publications.

Do you use your blog for your ministry?
Well, yes, I use my blog for ministry purposes. I believe that God has enabled my pen to write a few coherent thoughts pertaining to him and that he intends for me to use it for his glory. I can't cook; can't paint; can't decorate; don't scrapbook, occasionally clean the house, and am still working on the "fruit" that God desires to implant within me through the power of his Holy Spirit. But when it comes to writing my heart? Well, some days it's "spot on." For as long as God provides the ink, I intend to write for his kingdom purposes since so many other areas in my life lack the polish and shine therein.

Who are a few of your favorite blogs to read?

How do I hate this question? I love so many blogs for so many different reasons. But I'll give a shout out to the three girls who have stuck with me the longest, almost from the very beginning (and please forgive me in advance for feelings hurt, etc.; I'm simply answering the question):

Kristen @ Over the Backyard Fence  http://christianchick-kristen.blogspot.com/

Sassy Granny (who couldn't use some Sas every now and again?) http://sassygranny.blogspot.com/

Joy @ Pondering in his Presence http://ponderinginhispresence.blogspot.com/

Have you ever met your blog-friends in person? If so, which ones?

Well, I almost met you at "She Speaks" if you hadn't been sitting there crying on that couch in that bright and bubbly yellow shirt.

Joy http://ponderinginhispresence.blogspot.com/

Beth http://endeanmom1.blogspot.com/

Susan, a.k.a. "runner mom" http://scrunnermom.blogspot.com/

Angie http://www.theknightlynews.net/

Pamela http://inhisgraces.blogspot.com/

Lelia http://leliachealey.blogspot.com/

Kelly http://aromaofjoy.blogspot.com/

Katie G from Tennessee http://katiegfromtennessee.blogspot.com/

Who has made the biggest impact on your life?

With the understanding that no one person could replace the impact that the triune God has had in my life, I would say my four children. They have magnified my need for more of Jesus in my life; not because they're rotten, but rather because they are deserving of my earnest pursuit of the Divine. I want to leave a soulprint across their souls. I want to leave them a map for the road home. They have pushed me toward my perfection and forced the issue of my faith, and I am so thankful for their continuing prod along these lines.

How about some tried and true blog randomness:

Do you have a favorite scripture?

Jeremiah 9:23-24 "This is what the LORD says: 'Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the LORD."

The overriding goal of my life is to know God more with every passing day.

What would surprise us about you?

For as ponderous as I might appear to be on the blog, I'm actually quite funny and laid back in 3-D. I'm not a funny writer. I leave that to the Joanne's of the world, but I am a funny person who likes nothing more than a good laugh with a good friend. Actually, I don't even really need to know you to enjoy a good laugh with you. We live in an incredibly funny world.

What's your favorite flavored potato chip?
If one comes in chocolate, then that one.

Favorite thing to do with your family?

Our favorite pasttime is eating out together (remember I can't cook); we usually eat Mexican one night during the week and then enjoy the $2.22 pizza/drink combos at Sam's Club on another day of the week.

What book is on your nightstand right now?

Brother Lawrence's Practicing the Presence of God.

Oswald Chamber's My Utmost for His Highest

Margaret Feinberg's The Sacred Echo

Alicia Chole's Intimate Conversations

Last food you ate?

Does Starbuck's count? If so, then a pumpkin spice frappucino; if not, then a cheeseburger from Cook Out.

When was the last time you played the air guitar?

What's that?

C'mon Elaine, an air guitar!? Haven't you ever pretended to play the guitar or the drums to your favorite song? I see I'm going to have to purchase a ticket to North Carolina, get on an airplane and stop by your place, just so I can teach you the fine art of air guitar.

I'ts been a pleasure having you here today Elaine. I wish you could stay longer. Thank you for being faithful to the ministry He has placed in your hands, and through your hands, writing for Him and for us.

It's a joy to be on this journey with you.
