Aussie to American Translations

Some very precious friends have been staying with us. They are born and bred Aussies. What a joy it has been to love on our brothers and sisters from down-under. We all loved to tease one another about our accents. Each of us demanding the other sounded the silliest.

For those of you out there even remotely curious about the Australian dialect. I've included a few word translations below.

Dunny – Bathroom

Bubbler – Water Fountain

Mate – Friend/Dude

Rubbish – Trash

Slippery-Dip – Slide

Swimmer – Swimsuit

Muzzy – Mosquito

Jackaroo – Hired - Help

Capsicum – Pepper (Red, Green)

Bloke - Man/Cowboy

They may as well be speaking in an unknown tongue over here. I'd be scratching my head, "What?"

:o)

Our friend hosted an exchange student from Australia. She was talking about the "like" by her home and I had no idea what she was referring to and why it was so pretty and so close.

She finally described it as being a body of water and it was a lake!!!! I just didn't understand her accent, lol!

BTW, that was me that sent you a message on facebook, in case you didn't recognize me!

I enjoyed reading those. Thank you for sharing. We met several westerners while in Syria, and the Australians were my favorites. :)

When my kids were small, I had a good friend from Australia. Once when the boys were on the playground, her son was misbehaving. She chastised him in her delightful accent, "Brendan, I'm so cross with you." It sounded so much more civilized than screaming in my Jersey accent!
