When the school nurse calls...

No matter where you are or what you are doing, when you receive a call from the school nurse, she has the supernatural power to make time stand still.

"Hello, is this Samuel's mother?" the voice in the phone asks me. "Yes, it is." I say hesitantly. "Hi, this is Dori the school nurse from the grammar school..."

Time for me has now offically stopped.

You would think that after four children and quite a few of these phone calls in my lifetime I would be a pro at this. You would think that being a 911 emergency dispatcher, that I would be well trained to handle emergencies in my own life. You would think that I could think much more clearly than the average person, since emergencies are what I handle on a weekly basis.

You would think...

"Samuel had a little accident." The time-stopping nurse continues.

My mind is already running way ahead of her...little accident? Did he fall? Is he unconscious? Does he need stitches?

This is where my prior emergency experiences can make things even worse. The unimaginable is exactly what I am imagining.

"It seems that Samuel and his friend Nicky bumped heads and then Samuel bumped his head into a tree." She tells me. "I thought he may need stitches but it looks like the cut under his eye wasn't as deep a cut as I originally thought."

"Thank you Lord!" I silently pray.

Big sigh of relief on my end and time begins to move again...until the next time.

Goodness gracious that is scary!!
My little guy fell off his step stool today and I think broke his tail bone - he has been on the couch all day
My poor Cole!
I am glad your little one did not need stitches :)

AHhhh friend. You are right to end with, "until the next time". My kids have clearly shown that there is always a minor tragedy lurking around the next bend.

K-girl has had seizures, prolapsed bowels, Lyme... Beet has had intesuseption (sp?) and 5 inches of his intestines and his appendix removed days after his third birthday...

and B-Boy.. Mercy!! B-Boy was sent to teh ER 5 days before K's arrival to receive 8 stitches over his left eye. (APparently his little bruiser of a brother wanted the ball he was playing with and threw him into the wall when he wouldn't give it up.)

Hmmmmm.... I wish I could say it's just boys. Hmmmpfh! Kids!

Every time I see the caller ID say school- my heart stops for a second.
I'm glad it was nothing too serious.

I'm so glad he is all right. I know what you mean though - things that are humdrum in my everyday work become quite major when it's my kid with the problem!

I hope he is doing great now! It always feels like I am traveling in very sllooww motion when one of my punkins gets hurt. The drive to school which takes 12 minutes seems to take an hour...

Yep, when I first get those calls I always think the worse! My scene deals with broken limbs from a fall of that dreaded merry-go-round!

That is always a heart stopping situation. Glad he is okay. I also think "WHAT?" when the school calls. It is not fun getting those calls, but if they are okay then we are all relieved a little bit. What would life be without a few bumps and bruises????

I can totally relate!! Your story made me smile :)

Well, you've been tagged, my dear. Here's my pitiful story...
I'm just starting to really get into the blogging thing. I was just tagged myself for the very first time! The sad part is I don't even have 5 people that I can tag in return. I just went through my posts and found 3, count them 3, bloggers who have visited my blog. You were one, so now you have the privilege of this meme! Come on over and check it out! Kelli
