Apparently, I've Become A Jewish Mother

Should I be offended my little girl flew the coop and soared? Her wings opened up and took flight less than two weeks ago, and still no tear-filled calls asking to come home. Just like when I took her to kindergarten- I cried. She didn't.
The child who once needed help with every single solitary thing, has become an adult who needs no help at all.

The metamorphosis I have watched in her recently astounds me. The change isn't only hers.

Apparently, I have become Jewish.

Well, not really. But, when I complained about my independent grown child to my friend Ken this morning while ordering my soy-chai-extra hot, he roared with laughter from behind the counter. "You sound just like a Jewish mother!"

Ken is from New Jersey. He should know.

"What's wrong with a grown daughter calling her mother once in awhile? She doesn't even have to leave a long message. I'd be fine if she just left the sound of breathing on my answering machine. At least then I'd know she was alive! I worked hand in hand with God to give this child life Ken. Do you have any idea how many stretch marks bear her name? And this is the thanks I get?!"

Hmmmm, maybe I need to popover and pay her a little surprise visit.

That isn't something a Jewish mom would do, is it?

They spread their wings and fly, but they remember where the nest is when their wings get tired or a little frayed.

Oh, bless your heart! She'll call soon!
BTW, I read your post on the yummy smell for fall--I'll have to give it a try for "more than stinky" running shoes that belong to my boys!
Hugs!

Yes, it is! Surprisingly, my kids don't know what a phone is, but they WILL keep in daily touch on FaceBook. New generation! You might try that. (My daughter claims on her FB wall that I embarrass her sometimes in front of her facebook friends, but I think that is just a coverup - she really likes it.)

They go, they come, they go, they come, they come, they stay. Such a transition for a mom.

You crack me up! And make me sad to think of my babies leaving. Our pastor said one sunday "every day from birth a child becomes less and less yours."
Praying for you through this hard time.

I AM a Jewish mom from NJ!! But it's my Irish stepmom and my Italian mother-in-law who ladle out the guilt!
But I sure do miss hearing from my son - a freshman at college. My daughter (the junior at college) calls several times a day!
You'll hear from Meghan to be sure. The newness of independent living only lasts as long as new car smell!

When my boys went to college, the didn't call for over a week. It was horrible, but I restrained. After a couple of weeks, college life began to wear on them; they started coming home on the weekends and calling on regular basis.

Be patient. It will happen.
