Probability

Last Sunday morning I was flipping through the TV channels before leaving for church. I was so sad to hear a pastor of a very large church begin his teaching about the gospel of Matthew, the very beginning of the New Testament. He told his congregation, "The first chapter of Matthew is pretty boring, all of those begots and all…Abraham begot Isaac, and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers, And Judah begot Pharez and Zarah of Tamar, and Pharez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Aram…” He went on to say, “If you can hang in there long enough you will get to the good stuff.”

It physically grieved me to hear him say that. This pastor had missed such a great opportunity to share with his church. When I was a new Christian I had no idea what this list of names in the beginning of the New Testament was all about. Now I know differently. This list of names is the geneology of Jesus. Just as God began the book of Genesis with the words, “In the beginning…” He does the same thing here in the New Testament. He starts in the beginning by fulfilling the prophecy of the coming Messiah being from the line of David (Heir to the throne of David. Isaiah 9:6-7). He gives every single name of every relative of Jesus. He not only proves for us that Mary was from the line of David, but that Joseph, Jesus’ father here on earth was also from the line of David. What an AWESOME way to begin the New Testament!

My daughter Meghan is taking a math class this year called, ‘Probability and Statistics’. In this class she takes statistics and then with this information, she comes to a probable solution to the question given. I looked up the word probable and LOVED the definition…”Having more evidence for than against, evidence that inclines the mind to belief but leaves some room for doubt.” God has given us so much evidence of His existence. We will always have those moments where we may doubt. Praise God, through His Word and prophecies fulfilled, He has given us very little room for that. Our faith does not have to take a very big leap at all. This morning I have included a list of just a few of the prophecies of Jesus.

There are over 300 prophecies of the birth of our savior in the Bible. Again I must repeat that I have included just a few below. I have also included below, an excerpt from an interview with Josh Mcdowell on the internet called ‘What are the Odds'.

I pray you enjoy it as much as I did.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

"What is the probability that just eight of these prophecies could be fulfilled in one individual? Dr. Peter Stoner, in an analysis that was carefully reviewed and pronounced to be sound by the American Scientific Affiliation, states that the probability of just eight prophecies being fulfilled in just one person is 1 in 10 to the 17th power.

That's 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000!

Now maybe your minds go that high, but mine doesn't. So let me give you a visual picture of what it is. Take the state of Texas and fill the entire state two feet deep with silver dollars. Then take one silver dollar, mark it with a big red X, toss it back into the pile, and use bulldozers to mix up the entire state of dollars.

Then, blindfold a person, and starting at El Paso on the western border, let him walk the entire length and breadth of the state, from Amarillo to Laredo, all the way to Galveston on the Gulf of Mexico, stopping just once on the way to pick up a single silver dollar out of that two-foot-deep pile, blindfolded. The probability that on his first attempt he would pick up the silver dollar marked with the red X is the same probability that just eight of these prophecies could be fulfilled in any one individual!

In other words, it is nearly unthinkable to imagine that eight Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah could have come true in one man-let alone the sixty major prophecies that were fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth-unless, of course, he is "the Messiah, the Son of the blessed God," the One who was and is and is to come (Mark 14:61; Revelation 4:8)."

A Restoration Invitation

God is in the restoration business.

God can “ restore…the years that the locust have eaten.” Joel 2:25 He loves to do the possible with the impossible. “Behold, I make all things new.” Rev. 21:5 He tells his children.

I know His word to be true because I have seen it happen in my own life.

I'm Thankful For This...

This song below by the David Crowder band has become one of my favorites. Our church has an amazing worship team and when they play this song I am moved to tears every time.

Listening to the lyrics in this song makes me really stop and think about how miraculous it was that God came down to earth to restore my relationship with Him. I am ashamed to admit that I have great difficulty walking accross a room to make amends with someone who has hurt me. (I am working on this.)

With Thanksgiving right around the corner and Christmas not far behind it, I can't help but be overly grateful for a God who came down to earth...for me.

Oh The Glory Of It All!!!

Cookie bars why do you tempt me so?!?

We arrived at our favorite B&B in the late afternoon, just as they were putting out their afternoon tea and goodies. Besides the artichoke dip, cut veggies and dip, there above it all, high upon a glass pedestal were these.

When I ate my first bar, I thought they were some of the most delicious raspberry bars I had ever had. I even took three up to my room and left a note over them so that room service would not take them. Then I hunted down the woman who had made them, trying to keep my cool, just in case she wouldn't give up the recipe.

Thankfully she did. I am sure it had nothing to do with the crazed look in my eyes and my foaming of the mouth.

The recipe is from the food network and they are called, Peanut Butter and Jelly Bars. Well, if I'd known this was their name I would have probably not been as interested. Being the mother of four children and having made more than my fair share of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, I would have recoiled instead of embracing these little gems. Once I knew they were peanut butter, only then could I taste it. I do love peanut butter, but really had a hard time focusing on anything besides the delicious raspberry center and buttery crunchy topping.

Oh delicious cookie bars, why do you tempt me so?!?

What gift have you left unopened?

While at my writer's group meeting last night, I was challenged. I had shared that after an editor had accepted an article for publication, a month later I had been so busy, I still had not responded to her contract.

Blasphemy, to any of you writers out there.

God had given me a beautiful gift . A gift that I had prayed for, wanted desperately, and one that he had purposed just for me. When He put this gift gently inside the box, he knew that I would just love it. He wrapped this gift personally, choosing the most elegant paper and a bow that would take my breath away. He gently placed it in my arms and waited with joyful anticipation for the moment that I would open it up. He couldn't wait to see my response to all that He had carefully placed inside.

Instead, I left this gift unopened.

Friends, what gift has God given you, that you have set aside? What beautifully wrapped package has your Father personally given you, that you have hidden away? God has an abundance of blessing just waiting for you, read more about it here.

I would love to hear more about your gift left unwrapped. I am praying that you will find where you have stored it away and unwrap it...today.

You are the love of my life!

Eleven years ago today, on a crisp Fall afternoon, I made the greatest decision of my life. I promised to love you forever. A promise that has been amost easy to keep.

There is no greater blessing I have been given than to have spent the last eleven years as your wife. Through the heartaches and trials we have been through, you have always been my anchor, my rock. I can't even begin to imagine my life without you by my side. Your patience, kindness, Godly character, high IQ (don't let that one get to your head!), and your faith, have inspired me to greater heights than I had ever dreamed I would reach in a lifetime.

No matter how old I get, without a doubt, the greatest decision I have ever made was saying "I do" on November 16, 1997.

Happy Anniversary Sweetheart....and yes, put the wedding video in the VCR, I will meet you on the couch.

Love, ME

Yes, that is an apple...and no, I don't know how long its been there!

How many times have I been manipulated by a toothless grin, or persuaded by a sticky hand held in mine, eyes pleading for a toy, or a game? How many times have I begged my husband to enlarge our Christmas or birthday budget so that I can spend just a little more money on the kids, you know, to buy them that something special that they want so much.

That they take care of...never.

How many times has Paul reminded me to clean up their play room, or as we call it, our bonus room before said birthday or Christmas holiday, so that I will have reality hit me like ice water in my face?

My kids don't take care of their toys! Why do I fall for their ploys ever single time?!?

I put together a montage of some favorite moments while cleaning up our bonus room this weekend. After some editing help from my teenagers, these are the parts that we have decided to allow for your viewing pleasure.

Happy Birthday Meghan!!!

Seventeen years ago today, you were placed in my arms. Soft fuzzy blonde hair, just like a baby duck and the deepest dimples I had ever seen. I thought for sure that God had blessed me with the most beautiful baby girl He had created. What joy I had when I opened up your little blanket to look at your miraculous little body. All soft and chubby, you were the most amazing and wonderful thing I had ever laid my eyes on.

God has blessed me in so many ways Meghan. I will always be grateful that He chose me to be your mommy, your mom. Being a part of your growing up years has not always been easy, but it has ALWAYS been worth it.

May God continue to bless you honey, as you seek His face to guide you through this last high school year and onto the next step on that narrow path.

Remember sweetheart, with God ALL things are possible, you can't dream dreams big enough for all that He has for your life.

I LOVE YOU!

Mom

Life's about choices...THEN SINGS MY SOUL SATURDAY

"Life's about choices." One our favorite sayings, we share with our children. Just like the foxes that steal the grapes, it is the small compromises that can lead us down the path towards heartbreaking choices. Casting Crowns song, Slow Fade, explains it perfectly.

I'VE BEEN TAGGED!

Well friends, there seems to be lots of bloggy tag going on lately. Three blog friends have tagged me. So if you're not in the mood for random facts, run for lives.

My bloggy-bud Christelle from Beloved Mama and my newest blog friend, Jennifer from Through the Storms of Life, was first to tag me in this fun little game of randomness...
Here's how it works.

1) Link to the person who tagged you.
2) Post the rules on your blog (copy and paste 1-6).
3) Write 6 random things about yourself (see below).
4) Tag 6 people at the end of your post and link to them.
5) Let each person know they have been tagged and leave
a comment on their blog.
6) Let the tagger know when your
entry is up.

1) I am one of the most ungraceful women God has created. I am as dainty as an elephant on roller skates and a bull in a china shop.

2) I will reach for a donut and cookies over chips or soda any day of the week.

3)When I eat out, I almost always get iced water with lemon. I don't waste my calories on my drink. I would much rather eat my calories.

4) I can be very loud. My husband often ssshhhhh's me while I'm on the phone with a friend.

5) Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday of the year. No pretense, just the love of your family around the table, unified in gratefulness of heart...and love of turkey and stuffing!

6) When I breathe my last, I plan on holding my precious husbands' hand, looking into the eyes of my children and whispering, "Wow...that was awesome!"

7) I was my high school yearbook ad manager. (Jennifer's game of tag asked for seven facts!)

I chose some lovely new bloggy friends to join in the fun below!

Linda from Growin' with it, has tagged me to share fifteen things with all of you that I'm not afraid to admit. Just like Linda, I am only admitting to ten!

1. I don't enjoy playing cards. Actually I don't enjoy playing games much at all. And video games make me nauseus.

2. We have a tradition in our family, to watch the movie It's a Wonderful Life together on Christmas day, all curled up on the couch with the lights out, cuddled under blankets. It is how we close out the holiday season together.

3. We don't have a TV in our house with working cable right now. DVD's only!

4. I can sit and talk with ANYONE.

5. Hanging out with my husband is honest to goodness, my absolute favorite thing.

6. My second favorite thing would have to be women's Bible studies. I love gathering women to learn about God's word.

7. I am horribly sarcastic. (No. Really?!? Do ya think?)

8. I say, "Seriously, are you kidding me?!?" way too much.

9. My first car was a 1976 Ford Elite, white with red interior. It was as long as Noah's Ark, and almost as big.

10. I have been called (by many) a food pusher. I show my love by feeding you until you are sick to your stomach. No one, and I mean no one, leaves our home hungry!

...and I am now tagging you gals below to play along!

Homemade Potpourri

I am a HUGE fan of scented candles, pumpkin spice being my absolute favorite. I would have one burning all day long if I could. Unfortunately, that can get pretty pricey. Quite a few years ago I found a recipe online for simmering potpourri that you can make yourself. The scent that permeates your home from this blessed concoction can only be explained as heavenly!

I thought I would share Joanne's World Famous Simmering Potpourri Recipe with you, so that your home can smell just as delicious.

5-10 cinnamon sticks

1 heaping tbsp whole cloves

2-3 bay leaves

1/2 sliced lemon

1/2 sliced orange

Put all ingredients in a pot of water on your stove. Simmer over low heat, checking regularly so that it doesn't boil over or burn out all water.

Make sure to let me know how it works for you!

Jesus for President

Three reasons why you need to vote on Tuesday.

1. As Christians,we need to make our voices heard in the country God has blessed us with.

2. The freedom to vote is an honor and a privilege, period.

3. We need to cancel out our relatives votes.

For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Phil.3:20

Friends, don't let the twenty four hour media or even the outcome of Tuesday's vote get you down. Remember, our citizenship is in Heaven. Jesus Christ is our commander in chief and He will reign forever.

No matter who is nominated president or who controls the house or the senate, God works all things out for the good, for those who love Him, those who are called according to his purpose.

His will be done.

Immediately a rooster crowed.

Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

As I sat at my radio console at work, in walked one of our community service officers. Working for the police department has its perks, joking and laughing with one another is one of them. The woman began to peruse the discarded newspaper until she found what she was looking for, the horoscope section.

As she went around the room from dispatcher to dispatcher, she would ask their astrological signs and in a playful way, would read them their horoscope for the day. Being the occasional zealot, I began talking to myself about what I was going to say when she came around to me. Not a hill to die on, but surely I could speak up. I don't believe in horoscopes. God makes it very clear in his word, not to even dabble in astrology, period. I didn't want to let Him down. Even joking around, I wasn't feeling comfortable with it. “My sign is the fish.” I thought I might tell her. Or maybe I could say, “I don't believe in the stars, I go to the very one who made the stars.” Yes, that would be the perfect response to her, I thought. Changing my mind again, I jumped up to take a bathroom break. Zealot-wimp that I am, I was hoping they'd be done by the time I returned.

No such luck.

As I sat back down at my station, all eyes were on me. “Ok Joanne, your turn. What is your sign?” She smiled, newspaper in hand. Here was my chance, my opportunity to stand up for my faith, to share in truth and love that this horoscope stuff was for the birds. All eyes in the room looking at me for my answer, “Aquarius.” I chimed.

Immediately the rooster crowed.

I felt so awful. I had wanted to say one thing, but in fear of looking odd, or sounding strange, I said the exact opposite. Turning back to my radio console I thought to myself, “I am such a weak Christian. Geesh, Lord, how will you ever be able to use someone like me?” While these thoughts painfully bounced around in my head, my 911 phone line rang.

For the next twenty minutes I worked very hard to convince a nineteen year old man not to take his own life. Since he'd called from his cell phone, we also had to find a way to figure out his location so we could get him help. My heart broke listening through his tears of despair. The lack of hope he had in his life was difficult to bear. “There is a plan for your life....yes, you are worth something....” I shared with him. Thankfully, he finally decided to stop at one location until officers could respond and ascertain his welfare. Before we hung up, I told him that I would be praying for him.

Only moments before, God heard my own despair. The rooster crowed and still He chose to use me. Reminding me that none of us are perfect, all of us are weak, yet chosen for such a time as this.
